Genetic Testing For Breast Cancer

Every woman carries some risk of developing breast cancer during her lifetime, but some are at more risk than others. Inherited mutations in certain genes are known to raise the breast cancer risk.

You can learn more through a simple oral rinse DNA study, available during consultation with our breast surgeons. The test assesses overall breast cancer risk in women even if they have no family history. Such information can be useful for women trying to decide when to begin and how often to go for mammography screening, for example. Testing is typically covered by health insurance policies and our surgeons will help you qualify. Test results are generally ready in two to three weeks.

The advantage of knowing you are at high risk for breast cancer is that it opens the door to options for preventing the disease, reducing the risk, or detecting the disease at an early stage, when treatment is more likely to succeed.

Any woman concerned about her breast cancer risk is welcome to make an appointment to discuss the possibility of genetic testing.
