Nurse Residency

Excela Health Nurse Residency Program

The Nurse Residency Program is a comprehensive program that focuses on entry level nurses as they transition into practice. The program has two distinct phases:

Phase I: focuses on orientation (general and clinical) with a preceptor on the unit in which the nurse will be working. Phase I welcomes the nurse to Excela Health and provides the knowledge, tools and support to provide autonomous, safe and effective patient care. Residents will identify role expectations.

Phase II, Year One: encompasses 16 hours of interactive classroom education. Phase II builds upon the development of the new nurse by bridging gaps in clinical competence and reasoning, knowledge and skills. Nurse residents work collaboratively on an evidence-based project and have the opportunity to present to nursing colleagues and leadership at a celebratory nurse recognition event.

Phase II, Year Two: continues to build professional development by focusing on interpersonal skills to enhance teamwork, refine communication skills and build positive relationships with others. Opportunities for growth and development are explored at a career development seminar.

"I am thankful for the opportunities, support, and encouragement that the Nurse Residency Program has provided me. This program is operated by an exceptional team of nurse educators who strive to provide nurses a variety of opportunities. This program assisted me in finding my place within the system and nursing field. The Operating Room is where I was meant to be. If it was not for the Nurse Residency program, I would not have had the courage to take a chance in a new nursing unit within Excela Health."
- Kylie Luke, BSN, RN, Latrobe Hospital Operating Room
