A Coach Wrestles a Heart Attackback to Home

    Wrestling a Heart Attack

With a 2-inch vertical jump, Mark Marshall was destined to follow his father, uncles and grandfather onto the wrestling mat and into the national spotlight. And like his Olympic caliber lineage, Marshall earned widespread acclaim in professional wrestling all the while grappling with genetic heart disease. But Coach Marshall didn't anticipate a sudden takedown during practice last fall. Thankfully, the Seton Hill University wrestling team was in his corner, as was another national champion. Excela Health cardiothoracic surgeon Mark Suzuki, MD, and Excela Westmoreland Hospital hold the highest ranking in the state, region and nation from the Society for Thoracic Surgery and CareChex for cardiac care.

Just weeks after his triple bypass, Marshall was cleared to coach and resume personal training for another USA Wrestling competition this spring. "Dr. Suzuki went to the mat for me," says Marshall.

Dr. Suzuki’s no holds barred advice: "I tell my patients life is for living, so pursue your passion but know your heart."
