Excela Health’s Family Additions Maternity Center at our Westmoreland
Hospital campus delivers award-winning quality care in family-friendly
surroundings. To do that takes more than just a high level of attentive
care. It also requires well-trained people, from physician specialists
and physician’s assistants to nurse practitioners, obstetrical nurses
and other health care professionals. It demands the best equipment and
technologies, the highest level of support throughout the entire process,

Annually, more than 1,200 babies are delivered at the Family Additions
Maternity Center and through it all, we offer individual sensitivity and
care as well as professionalism and expertise. We pride ourselves on providing
a knowledgeable team to meet the individual needs of each mother and child.
And we’re sensitive to the special concerns of today's modern families.
We offer a warm and caring family-centered environment. Our 10 private
labor-delivery-recovery (LDR) suites have all the comforts of home, plus
all the latest in health technology for both mom and baby.
And should you need specialized, emergency care during delivery, dedicated
C-section rooms are equipped with the latest technology right down the hall.
Welcoming Your Newborn
Bonding with your baby begins immediately following delivery through our
24/7 couplet care, which means baby “rooms in” so that our
nursing team can help prepare your new family for life at home. Our private
post-partum rooms also are furnished with pull-out beds helping to promote
family togetherness.
Recognized as a “Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace” by the Breastfeeding
Friendly Workplace Collaborative and the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition,
Excela Health offers you the support you need to successfully breast feed
your baby. The Family Additions Maternity Center has six certified lactation
professionals on the unit including two Registered Lactation Consultants
and an inpatient lactation specialist. Our lactation consultants are here
before delivery with prenatal education and they see every mom during
the hospital stay. Once you and your baby are home, they are available

Our Family Additions Maternity Center also features:
Special Care (Level II) Nursery – for infants born prematurely, with very low birth weight, or other
difficulties, we provide ’round-the-clock care by certified neonatal
nurse practitioners and neonatologists. Pediatricians are also close by
to address special newborn needs.

Excela Health Named Among Nation's Best Maternity Hospitals
The Family Additions Maternity Center at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital
remains ranked among the nation’s best, featured in the Best Maternity
Hospitals 2022 edition of Newsweek, which publishes the honor roll annually.
For the second year in a row, Excela Health is one of 217 hospitals across
36 states on this list which is compiled by the news magazine in partnership
with The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that reports
on the safety and quality performance of U.S. healthcare facilities. To
be considered for the list, hospitals had to demonstrate adherence to
a variety of standards for excellence in maternity care including low
rates of C-section, episiotomy and early elective deliveries and follow
important protocols to protect mothers and babies.
National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program
The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created by
Cribs for Kids®, the only national infant safe sleep organization. Based in Pittsburgh,
PA, Cribs for kids is dedicated to preventing infant sleep-related deaths
due to accidental suffocation. As a Nationally Certified Safe Sleep Hospital,
Excela Health is recognized for following the safe sleep guidelines recommended
by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and providing training programs
for healthcare team members, and family caregivers.
Excela Health Recognized on Hepatitis B Birth Dose Honor Roll
Excela Health and the Family Additions Maternity Center at Westmoreland
Hospital have been recognized by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC)
on its nationwide honor roll for their efforts in protecting newborns
through Hepatitis B vaccinations. As a patient safety initiative, the
Hepatitis B birth vaccine program has a coverage rate of 91 percent from
January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017. Excela Westmoreland Hospital
is one of 407 hospitals in the U.S. to achieve this distinction of being
named to the honor roll. An estimated 22,000 infants are born to women
in the U.S. infected with the Hepatitis B virus, posing a serious threat
to infants and potentially leading to chronic infection.
Also, the Excela Health Pharmacy offers families tetanus, diphtheria, flu
and pertussis (whopping cough) boosters as part of newborn care at the
Family Additions Maternity Center. This program began in March 2013 as
part of the health system-sponsored childbirth education classes.
Family Additions Maternity Center Now Part of Keystone Scholars
Keystone Scholars is Pennsylvania’s investment in your baby’s
bright future. Westmoreland County was selected as one of six counties
in Pennsylvania to participate in Keystone Scholars. The Pennsylvania
Treasury is investing $100 for every baby born or adopted in Westmoreland
County during calendar years 2018 and 2019 to use for future higher education
expenses. A baby with a higher education savings account at birth is three
times more likely to pursue education or training after high school and
four times more likely to graduate. Higher education includes community
college, vocational and technical schools, 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges,
and graduate school programs. Parents have until the baby’s first
birthday to claim the $100 Keystone Scholars investment. Keystone Scholar

About C-Sections
In the United States, nearly one in three women gives birth by Cesarean
section, which is not the ideal. Cesarean sections carry serious risks
of infection or blood clots, and many women experience longer recoveries
and difficulty with future pregnancies. C-sections can also cause problems
for babies, such as breathing difficulties. In the long-term, research
shows that C-sections can cause chronic pelvic pain in some women, and
babies born by C-section are at increased risk of developing chronic childhood
diseases like asthma and diabetes.

for helping women avoid this major abdominal surgery unless it is medically
necessary for the health and well-being of mother and baby.
