Our lives often revolve around one of our main senses, our vision. Low vision, because of macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy is now one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. Low vision occurs when an individual loses a significant amount of vision but still has some "usable" sight remaining. Barclay Rehabilitation’s occupational therapists offer a program that trains people to utilize this vision and to regain as much independence as possible through use of various pieces of adaptive equipment and techniques, such as:

• Assist the patient in coping with vision loss.
• Assist the patient in performing activities of daily living.
• Adapt the patient’s activities of daily living and modify the environment to maximize independence. A home assessment may be beneficial.
• Improve reading skills by helping the patient learn to use a magnifier, shift blind spots, use compensatory techniques and operate adaptive devices.
• Provide community resource information.
• Make lighting recommendations.
• Lend select adaptive equipment for trial use to determine the most effective solution before purchase.
