Aquatic physical therapy is physical therapy conducted under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist and a physical therapy assistant within a water-filled environment. Aquatic physical therapy consists of therapeutic exercises designed to aid in the rehabilitation of various conditions to progress toward a specific functional outcome.

Why Water? - The water provides buoyancy, which allows for increased ease of movement of weakened muscles and inflamed joints. Additionally, water provides resistance, at about 60 times more than air, to allow for strengthening.

Benefits of Aqua Therapy
• Decreases pain
• Decreases muscle spasms
• Increases joint mobility and range of motion
• Increases muscular strength and endurance
• Decreases joint compression forces to allow for limited /early weight bearing

Aqua therapy can be employed to improve a variety of conditions, such as orthopedic concerns (including post fracture), spinal cord injuries, strokes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, lower back pain, physical weakness, balance disorders and developmental delays.

Aquatic physical therapy is beneficial for both adults and children. The ability to swim is not a requirement to participate in an aquatics program. Water depth varies and can be adapted based upon each patient’s skill level and needs so patients can exercise comfortably and safely.
