Childbirth Education
We’re here to prepare you and your family for one of life’s most important events through education, information and preparation. Classes are free of charge unless otherwise indicated.
• Childbirth and Beyond
Evening and Weekend Classes
Provides information and tools to use during labor and delivery, including pain management options and breathing and relaxation exercises. A labor support person should attend with you.
• Lamaze Classes
It’s not ALL about the breathing. These classes emphasize natural childbirth methods by accomplishing pain management through breathing and relaxation techniques. A labor support person should attend with you. A fee is charged (insurance reimbursement available).
• OB Department Tour
Occurs the third Sunday of the month, 4 p.m. Registration not required.
• Gestational Diabetes
• Breastfeeding Success
Evening and Weekend Classes.
Promotes successful breastfeeding through information about techniques, newborn feeding behaviors, and common challenges. Bring a baby doll to class if available. A support person should attend with you. Classes are taught by lactation consultants.
• Infant Care Classes
Two-week series.
Offers the basics of baby care including hands-on diapering, swaddling and bathing; please bring a baby doll is available. Car seat safety is provided to ensure proper installation and use of your car seat.
The following is a list of our classes for children, friends and all members of the family.
• Sibling Class
Big brothers and big sisters, age 3 to 8, attend with their parents to prepare for the new baby. The child should bring a baby doll or stuffed animal to practice diapering, swaddling and feeding techniques. A tour of the Family Additions Maternity Center is included.
• Your Changing Body for Boys / Your Changing Body for Girls
These classes address the physical and emotional changes of puberty. A parent or guardian should attend with the child.
"Your Changing Body for Boys"
Where: Westmoreland Hospital
When: Saturdays, February 11; May 19, and October 6, 2012, 10 a.m. to noon
Who: Boys ages 10 to 13, accompanied by a parent or guardian.
"Your Changing Body for Girls"
Where: Latrobe Hospital
When: Fridays, April 13; August 3, and December 7, 2012, 6 to 8 p.m.
Who: Girls age 9 to 12, accompanied by a parent or guardian
"Your Changing Body for Girls"
Where: Westmoreland Hospital
When: Fridays, February 3; June 1, and October 5, 2012, 6 to 8 p.m.
Who: Girls age 9 to 12, accompanied by a parent or guardian
• Car Seat Safety
Provided to ensure proper installation and use of your infant car seat.
• Friends and Family CPR
A non-certificate class addresses how to help a child who is choking, has stopped breathing, or whose heart has stopped. Ideal for parents and others who provide child care. It is recommended to attend this class within the first or second trimester of pregnancy to optimize practice techniques. A fee is charged for each person attending.
