Third -Year Residents

Heidi Nagel, MD

Medical School: The University of Florida
Undergraduate: The University of Florida

"I obtained my undergraduate degree in music. After medical school, I started a residency specializing in pediatrics at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C. I then switched to family medicine by transferring to the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. To pursue more complete training in family medicine, I transferred to Latrobe Family Medicine Residency as a second-year resident. Latrobe offered a great appeal to me when choosing a location and program. I enjoyed the small town, northern climate; accessibility to various major attractions such as Niagara Falls and Gettysburg, and a location close to family in Ohio. Latrobe also offered a much more personalized education with an unopposed, small program. Exposure to supportive specialists who participate in educating the residents is unique. I had decided to join the program for many reasons before I even discovered how generous the program is from offering across-the-street, discounted housing with utilities covered, to reimbursement for moving expenses, required licensure and testing, and continuing medical education. The faculty support individuality through guided education and supportive autonomy. The residents participate in many social activities and work closely together as a cohesive team. I am delighted to be part of a team of residents here."

Undergraduate: Penn State University
“I wanted to come to Latrobe because it is an unopposed residency program with the opportunity to experience continuity of care with patients from the outpatient to inpatient setting. The staff is friendly and eager to teach.”

Emily Fellin, MD
Medical School: Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia
Undergraduate: University of Richmond, Virginia
“I chose Latrobe because of its unique combination of attributes: Three family medicine inpatient services that provide great continuity between our inpatient and outpatient care; two lectures daily to keep up-to-date on important Family Medicine topics, and great benefits including subsidized housing across the street from the hospital. Most importantly, there’s a cohesive, supportive, fun group of attendings and residents who are the best colleagues, teachers and mentors a resident could want.”

Teresa Stamplis, DO
Medical School: Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate: The College of Wooster, Ohio
“My search for the ideal residency program began with a list of unopposed family practice programs reasonably close to family in Johnstown. The abundance of nearby recreational opportunities made this area stand out. What sold me on Latrobe, however, were the interactions with the residents, faculty and staff; the collaborative and supportive environment; the degree of input from residents on decisions made regarding the program, and the overall concern for the well-being of the residents. All just a few aspects that put this program at the top of my list.”

Anthony Mazza, MD
Medical School: Ross University
Undergraduate: SUNY Binghamton, N.Y.
“I wanted to come to a rural area for residency since I grew up in rural upstate New York and plan to return there to practice. Shortly after starting residency, I knew I made a good decision in coming here. As an un-opposed residency, our input is valued much more than it would be in a program where we would be competing with other residents … we have the perfect combination of autonomy and support here.”

Lindsey Beabout, DO
Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate: Westminster College
“I chose Latrobe because it's a small town with a community hospital, and I see myself ending up in a similar location after residency. I love the community and the relationships the residents have with one another. A support system is pertinent for residents and this program comes with one built in.”
