Second-Year Residents

Ryan Floyd, MD
Medical School: Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.
Undergraduate: Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.

"I chose to attend Latrobe Family Medicine residency because I thought it was a perfect fit for me as a person and as the best place to prepare me for the future. From a personal standpoint, I found the residents to be some of the nicest and most social I had rotated during my years in medical school. There was a positive energy and it was a place where everyone was friends both on and off work. The attending physicians were extremely nice and spent countless hours teaching the residents about medicine as well as getting to know them as people. I believe the autonomy and responsibility required by the residency prepares you to be a family physician in any setting. I got to learn firsthand as a 3rd and 4th year student how much the residents were learning on a daily basis as well as enjoying their days. As a Pittsburgh native, I feel fortunate to find my ideal residency in a place I love to live."

"One of the highlights of my medical school experience was my family medicine rotation at Latrobe Family Medicine. I stayed in the student housing on Polk Street with a fun group of Jefferson medical students, and each day we walked the short walk together to the clinic where we saw patients and presented their histories to Dr. Mills, Horne, and DiCola. While I ended up doing another residency in another specialty, I never forgot about my time in Latrobe. When I finally decided to switch careers, Latrobe was an obvious choice. Here was a practice where the doctors and nurses truly lived in the community with their patients. Their children attended the same schools, and they sat in the same church pews. I wanted my training as a Family Practice physician to be in place just like this."

"I chose Latrobe mainly due to the residents and attending physicians. Everyone was welcoming and warm. I saw that everyone got along and felt like a family which is important to me. The environment here is also conducive to learning without feeling pressured."

"I grew up in New Jersey with no ties to western PA, but knew I wanted to practice rural family medicine, which led me to apply to Latrobe. I chose Latrobe for residency primarily because of the atmosphere I felt while interviewing. Everyone was welcoming, friendly and excited to be here. I wanted to be a part of that immediately. Of all the places I interviewed, I didn't find another that had small community outpatient offices that allowed residents to work in a place that mirrors family medicine after residency. It’s fun to learn when everyone gets along and helps each other, and that’s what Latrobe seemed to be--and is definitely turning out to be!"

"I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and am a huge Steelers and Penguins fan.  I attended Saint Vincent College and enjoy doing many of the outside activities that this area offers.  After medical school I did a year of residency in ob/gyn but decided family medicine would be a better fit for me.  I chose this program because of the continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient, exposure to subspecialties, obstetric experience, friendly residents, and attending physicians who are eager to teach."

"When I was looking for a family residency program, I wanted an unopposed program in a rural community hospital that was close to home.  The program at Latrobe has offered just that.  Residents here have complete access to the hospital rotations and specialties that may not be offered to family medicine residents at larger academic settings.  In the rural setting, the family physician is trusted by the patient for any problem with utilization of referrals as needed, not seen as the gatekeeper to see a specialist.  As a western Pennsylvania native, I appreciate these patients whose warm hearts and open minds bring added joy to the practice of medicine."
