Launched in 1995, the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation has made gifts of over $8 million to Latrobe Hospital, enabling them to support a variety of programs and purchase new equipment. Projects for support represent a diversity of needs throughout the hospital including spiritual care, patient and community education, professional development and clinical concerns.
Its vision is to encourage an environment that will attract charitable support continuously in order to assist Excela Health Latrobe Hospital in carrying out its mission of improving the health and well-being of every life it touches. Throughout its history, the LAHCF provided funding for:
Cardiac rehabilitation exercise equipment
Golden Hour/Heart Fair community education and health improvement program
Partners Advocating Total Health (PATH), a collaborative health initiative
Emergency Department renovations
The establishment of the Palmer Wellness Program
Camp Focus, a summer therapeutic day camp for children with emotional difficulties
Family Medicine Residency Program and more
Special Events
The foundation holds an annual golf outing that has garnered funding for a variety of projects including renovation of the Emergency Department and monies for scholarships. An annual lecture co-sponsored with the Latrobe Area Hospital Aid Society and the Latrobe Business and Professional Women called the "Women's Health Series," focusing on health topics relevant to today's women.
Donor Recognition
Any monetary gift to the foundation, regardless of size, is appreciated and recognized. Donors who contribute at any level receive recognition on the Annual Donor Recognition Wall, located in a commemorative area of Latrobe Hospital. The parchment display, framed in oak and gold, lists all individuals, organizations, businesses and foundations who make contributions within a calendar year up through January 31 of the following year.
To honor donors with a cumulative contribution of at least $2,500 since 1997, the LAHCF created the John R. Mazero Fellow Recognition. John R. Mazero, MD, serves as the LAHCF president and for many years as a dedicated physician on the Latrobe Hospital medical staff, serving as its medical director for a period of time. Because of his extraordinary dedication, the first major recognition program was named in his honor. Those who achieve "Fellow" ranking represent a broad base of support. Fellows are honored by an oak and brass wall tribute within the hospital and receive a mahogany plaque and other forms of recognition in appreciation for their generous support.
Scholarships
The Dr. Andrew David Bagby Family Medicine Scholarship awarded annually to individuals with an interest in family medicine and who are in training at Latrobe Hospital. The Michael A. Barkey, CRNA, Scholarship bestowed on an exemplary individual pursuing training as a nurse anesthetist through the Excela Health School of Anesthesia.
